When I got my '08 with the visibility package, I also thought the power folding mirrors were a waste. I have since discovered that they are very handy at drive through cash machines where the bank manages to place the protective stanchions just far enough from the machine so that in order not to hit the stanchion with your mirror (check out the paint scrapes on any cash machine stanchion next time you're at one), you have to be just a bit too far away from the machine for comfort. Some people seem to have to climb halfway out of their cars to reach the machine. Now, I just hit the mirror folding switch as I'm approaching the machine and have no worries about paint scrapes on a black mirror. It is necessary? No. Is it convenient? Yes.
