I'm a little disappointed in both the lack of response to my earlier post that Ike was bearing down on me (only 2 responses) and the aftermath. I am proud to live in one of the most vibrant parts of the country, that keeps the nation's energy needs going, has the largest health care complex in the world and arts and theatre second only to New York. I have a house on a barrier island where I have lived for 20 years. I have paid nearly 150,000 in combined insurance since then on a house I bought for 200,000 and have put nearly 50,000 in hurricane-resistant improvements. I have had only one claim prior to Ike; 3,000 for a new roof after a hail storm. I don't ask anyone to subsidize my house nor my life. My neighbors and I make every effort to be self sufficient. All are amazingly hard workers in every conceivable industry and like those throughout history, feel at home on or near the water and understand completely the life giving and life taking away powers that the water has. Please don't confuse us with folks that expect the government to cover every bad decision they make, refuse to heed warnings, won't work to save themselves and others when danger approaches. But most of all, the stress both on us and the rest of the nation that Ike has wrought seems to have brought out the worst in too many people that want to restrict or deny an individual's right for risk. Oh, and by the way, in case you are interested my break away walls worked perfectly; nothing in the house proper was disturbed and it will take a few weeks to restore water, power and sewage because the conduits and pipes were blown out when the 9 foot storm surge passed. I am 16.5 feet above the water. My guess is that 90% of the houses on my island lost only their downstairs structures with minimal insurance loss. In fact, we are all prepared already to pay anything over the water out of our own pockets since that is not covered by any insurance. I would not be surprised that the uproar reflected in many of these posts will lead us to be declared uninsurable and that would be an incredibly shame if only more of you could experience what it is like to live on the Gulf.
