OT: Logic behind Maxi-Fuses? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 04:13:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had to replace a 30A Maxi-Fuse yesterday in my sons's vehicle (not a Saab) which required a trip to the Auto Parts store to buy one. $2.75 for a fuse, Yikes! I have lots of the standard size automotive blade fuses, as well as the mini-sized variety, but no Maxi's.
Which prompts my question. When dealing with AC power, the fuse size is related to voltage level since you do not want the voltage to jump across the contacts inside the fuse when it "clears". Hence the higher the voltage, the larger the fuse, to create a longer arc path preventing this condition.
But automotive fuses are all 12Volts! Why a Maxi-size 30A when a standard size 30A provides the same overcurrent protection? Besides, it is darn hard to see inside that Maxi-sized case to see if the element has cleared!
