Varies from dealer to dealer. Bought a Saab 9000 from a dealer in a decidely snooty suburb here in CT. Salesman made a big deal that the car had been sold and serviced by the dealership. But when I asked about the previous owner's name, he clammed up and said, "Our customers don't like us to give out that information." Nevertheless, her name was in the owner's manual, though I honored the no-contact comment. The car was great.
My missus bought one from a Maine dealer who provided the owner's name. He was a dentist in SC. Said he loved the car, leased it because it was so darn pretty, but then didn't drive it that much. That was nine years ago and she still has the car and it still looks like new and runs like a little Swedish bear.
I'd like to talk to the owner of a car I was interested in, but would rather talk to the people who serviced it.
