depends on what you really need to do. If you want to print photos you need a better printer than a basic color laser. They just aren't meant for that. Ink jet is better quality for photos; toner is more cost-effective for stuff like MS Office documents, presentations, etc.
The Kodak 5300 is pretty good for scan/copy/print, but I only scan and print photos with mine. Ink costs aren't bad this way. Copying isn't so good if there's a lot of solid areas in the page being copied: you get damp pages. I use a Xerox color laser (Phaser 6120) for general use.
Toner is less cost per page to own, but the stuff still isn't cheap. I get a year out of the color toner in the Xerox 6120, but it costs about $210 for the 3 colors (about 1500 pages). Then about $100 for the black one I replace every two years. That's the equivalent of a about 3 dozen sets of ink jet cartridges, though.
