the heads are designed to have a pretty limited life. Thermal ink jet head technology and its business model is built around replacement of the heads. When you buy a new ink cartridge you are actually buying a new head, which is part of the cost. They are usually good for 2-3 times the ink life you get out of a single cartridge, which is why refilling works. However, the generic ink you refill with is not necessarily fully compatible with the heads so you may not get the extra savings you hope for. The heads can still die early, something I have found on different makes and models, even when using 3rd-party reman heads.
Also, the non-OEM ink can actually damage the heads. In the case of Epson printers which use piezo technology (instead of thermal) and have permanent heads, the wrong ink can kill a head (1st hand experience here) and it's not cost effective to replace just the head.
Also, if you are printing photos, 3rd party inks don't undergo the same testing as those from the printer manufacturer and don't deliver the same color fidelity, print quality and typically won't last as long as the OEM inks.
I've been in the ink and paper labs at Kodak, HP, Epson and Xerox and seen the level of R & D and testing they do. The cheap ink guys can't match it. If you are printing photos you want to have last, the OEM ink is a much better choice.
