Brakes is one of the easiest thing to sell. Everyone is afraid of running out of brakes and because of that, the sad part is that they get oversold by hungry mechanics and service writers.
But one thing though that has starting to happen with the new cars and long oil changes intervals like 10K miles and the soft pads used from factory.
You have to either sell them brakes prematurely at the oil change or sternly inform them that they might have to come back for brakes in between that the car is due for the next oil change and hope that they are not on a road trip somewhere when the pads go metal to metal.
I see cars with 40-50% remaining and they sometimes are out of pad before the next oil change, 10K later.
But I also hate to throw away 40-50% of perfectly good brakes so I let the customer decide what they want to do.
