In NYC there are places in the jewelry district who will not only sell you and finish a new setting and re-use the old for something else, there are are those who will re-build the old setting into something you like better. My wife and I have been going to a jeweler (word used in teh sense of a mechanic who works on metal, not a retail merhcant who has done impressive tghings at very modest prices. Don't go to that market cold, you will be ripped off. My wife knocked a prong off one of the tiny stones on her very modest engagement ring from 30 years ago, and he replaced the stone, repaired the ring and re-set the stone for under $50. offered to get her a bigger garnet for the main stone for a few dollars more, she declined for sentimental reasons.
The markup on jewelry at retail is at least 3 to one. I'me sure veryone is leery of on line contacts, but if you are within reach of NY and want to contact me off line, I will make suggestions. If not, find an old time person near where you are. The big, older cities all have those people.
There are hundreds, thousands of stock settings (they pick the ring and setting (the little basket on top) separately and buid a ring.
