Having just experienced a "heavy" snowfall 10 days ago (very wet snow that accumulated on rooftops), I would think the _weight_ of the snow would be the biggest short term issue. Flat roof framing (here in New Orleans) is not built to hold for extended periods tons of dead load which is what the snow build up is. I'd want to get it off the flat roof as soon as reasonably possible. Even if the roof structure was framed using 2x12's, I'd be leery of an extended dead load condition. To clarify, a 10' x 10' flat roof section with 1" of snow is carrying at least 7#'s of extra load (and upwards of 30#'s) for every square foot of flat roof deck. And that's for only one inch of snowfall. What is the dead load capacity of the flat roof you're talking about? Dead load will include everthing from the ceiling, through the joists/rafters, and the entire roof system. Now add the extra load of snow...
As far as flashing and preventing the rot damage you spoke of, how high does the new flashing extend up the side wall? Snowfall that accumulates above that point will pose a potential problem.
I would not want to do the job, either, but maybe you should get your hubby out there. What do all you Northern builders say? Is my concern for the weight of the snowfall misplaced?
