I bought my '96 900 SE in December '04 with 105k. It's now at 173k. After about two years of ownership, I calculated the non-maintenance and non-routine costs at about what your figure is at. No gas, tires, oil, etc., and with a fuel pump unit and things, it was reasonable at that monthly figure.
Since then, I've had four new rotors, pads, a block heater (what a wuss - it's in a heated garage), rear shocks, all new bushings and front end except for new struts, and assorted misc. items like the little lower dash fan for the ACC for the interior temp sensor.
Oh, yeah, there was the new head gasket. The bolt behind the steering pump sheared off in the head. While the head was off, I put in all new sensors, hoses, cleaned the electrical contacts, and bought a new IDM using the old as a spare. New gaskets and the hoses, sensors, etc. as well as silicon vacuum hoses were easily under $500 including shipping. It didn't take me a whole lot of time even as methodically as I did disassembly and reassembly.
Of course, there's been, ahemm, performance modifications not factored in. :-)
When it's all said and done, as tempted as I am to buy a new Volvo or BMW, I will most likely buy another '96 to '98 900SE. I have a WIS, am familiar with the car by now, and parts arrive by next day if absolutely required. The total cost of ownership is low.
