The worst ash fall I've been caught outside in was Mt Spurr in 1992 - I was out bicycle riding on a sunny summer day, then...the ash was dark gray particals about beach sand size and so thick it cut down visibility, blocked out the sun, and sounded not unlike a hard rain. Later it was rinse/wash/repeat on my old C900.
Pyroclastic flow will certainly damage the paint...and aluminum parts. Pyroclastic flows from the Cook Inlet volcanoes (Mt Spurr, Mt Redoubt, Mt St. Augustine) flow at around 1300f. They're possibly the deadlest natural thing on earth. Fortunately nobody lives very close to Mt Redoubt, but a pyroclastic flow can be expected to melt glaciers and the resulting flood/mudflow (Lahar is the geologic term) will end up at the Drift River oil terminal. Unlike the Philippines, Alaska has lots of space (with 41 active volcanoes) and not so many people.
Still no eruption here though. I was reminded this morning that there was an alert for Mt Redoubt in 2003 and Mt Spurr in 2004 but no eruption. Mt St Augustine did erupt in 2006, ash missing Anchorage but hitting Kenai.
