It's incredibly abrasive and can be VERY fine stuff--like hot talcum powder or superfine sand in some cases. It will plug up an air filter fast, but the stuff that gets through will hurt the engine.
Put a cover on the car, even in a garage. Change the air filter and cabin filter before you drive. Not sure how often to do it after, even if the air seems to be clear.
I just read a book on volcanoes and what goes on prior to and during an eruption and it ain't good news for cars or people. (great book, BTW: "Volcano Cowboys")
How likely it is to affect Anchorage of it will depend on the direction of the eruption (they aren't always straight up) and prevailing winds, but ash plumes tend to go up high and spread out a lot.
Good luck!
