Ah, newlywed furniture purchases. I remember it well. If a couple can get over this hurdle gracefully it's a very good sign.
A few thoughts:
Use the Internet to check out styles. Likes/don't likes. Get an idea of prices. If you can get these questions answered in the comfort of your own home in front of a computer screen, do so.
When you go to stores, look into some of the smaller, family owned places. They may not have a big marketing department behind them, but their quality tends to be better, I think, and their sales staff is experienced.
Don't try to furnish the whole house in one fell swoop. It's expensive and unnecessary. Pace yourself and your budget.
The measuring tape is your friend. That sectional couch you love in the store will look waaaay bigger in your home.
Consignment shops and used furniture can help you stretch your budget. You can furnish some rooms on the cheap with the idea that it's just a placeholder.
Lots of people enjoy restoring their new-to-you treasures. Nice hobby.
The reason today's furniture is kinda chintzy is that buyer's are less stable and aren't looking for a dining room set they can pass on to their children. So the stuff looks temporary, because that's what it's designed to be.
Practical matter -- watch out for sharp edges, thick, knee-cracker table legs, heavy dining room chairs ...
And finally, I recall noticing that shopping for furniture makes some females ... well, receptive. Watch to see if her eyes dilate. Must be that nesting thing.
Happy hunting.
