there has to be a Saab for every model category? Just because you build it doesn't mean buyers will come. By offering something for everyone Saab would blend into traffic like a guard rail.
Saab could probably do quite well with 3, possibly 4 models, with distinctive designs and with sedan and hatchback versions of all models.
1. Small entry level car, sized like the 9-2
2. Medium size sedan and wagon, like the 9-3
3. Larger car like the 9-5 in both sedan and wagon versions.
4. Convertible version of the small or medium car with standard and Aero models.
Have XWD an option on mid and Aero models.
Have base, mid-range and Aero versions (sort of like Linear/Arc/Aero):
Base: cloth seats, fewer bells & whistles, low pressure turbo engine
Mid: Leather or cloth seats, moderate toys, full pressure turbo
Aero: Mid-range with better seats (leather), more toys, higher output engine.
Then market like crazy with all the benefits of Saab: handling, comfort, safety, practicality, etc.
The marketing is critical, and the lack of it is a big reason Saab is hurting these days.
