I read one of the German news articles to get a better idea of what it's all about. Don't know if the automatic translation below will make a whole lot of sense.

Basically, some Saab enthusiasts in Dresden are forming an organization that will seek to not only raise awareness about the Saab community, but also attempt to raise money to purchase the brand. You can register for free to boost their membership numbers and get on their mailing list, and then at a later date they plan to start asking for donations/investments "from 50 to 500 Euros." The article makes clear that if a deal cannot be worked out, all monies will be refunded.

They acknowledge it's a pretty crazy idea, but they're hoping to get the support of celebrity Saab owners (they list Bill Gates, Steven King and Jay Leno). Personally I think the attention this generates would be the most valuable result, as it could help sway a potential buyer by showing the loyal following the brand has.

Nothing to lose by joining, so I went ahead and signed up.
