Lifetime warranties are the biggest marketing joke Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 20:52:06 In Reply to: Dodge offers lifetime warranty. I used to compete against people offering "lifetime" warranties. These are illegal in some states.
Think about it. Define "lifetime."
The "lifetime" of the customer? Who is the customer? What if an organization buys the product (I used to sell to fire departments, for example). Then the "lifetime" of the organization is forever, unless it ceases to exist. There could be 10 generations of human beings running that organization. Do you really think the manufacturer is going to honor a "lifetime" warranty that long?
What if I am the customer, and I sell the product 5 minutes after I buy it? Then what? Is this awesome "lifetime" warranty transferrable? Likely not.
Some manufacturers claim a "lifetime" warranty on their product, meaning "the life of the product." So, in other words, if you buy the product and it fails 5 minutes later, 5 minutes was the "lifetime" and you have no leg to stand on. Think I'm crazy? Don't...I've seen this happen!
This is absolute idiocy and a total marketing ploy. Take it from a sales guy!!
A real warranty, IMHO is one with a specific term and specific details of what is covered. Don't ever get fooled by a lifetime warranty on anything.
Man, I feel like I've been on a soap box but this is one of my personal pet peeves after 20+ years in sales.
