Why is this so outrageous? Yes, it's all about marketing but just about everything is these days. :-)
The Chrysler warranty is clearly defined, and many of the terms are easily available to view online. It's non-transferable, covers the powertrain for as long as the original purchaser owns the vehicle. Fairly simple. It doesn't help resale, it doesn't lower your chances of a catastrophic failure, and there's no guarantee that Chrysler will be around in the next ten years to honor the warranty but there it is. I would consider it another feature like Stow-and-Go seating, a sunroof, or cruise control; something one customer values and another doesn't.
As we all know a _huge majority_ of the buyers will never see any value in this warranty - and Chrysler knows that too, that's why they offered it. But for some people, it would be a benefit. For example, my parents bought a new minivan a while back and they tend to keep their cars for many, many years and rack up a lot of miles due to trips to see the grand kids. They probably would have benefited from this but they bought their van about 2 months prior to this warranty being offered.
I've taken advantage of lifetime warranties before - back in college, I worked on my cars myself and would buy things like water pumps and alternators that had a lifetime warranty. That way, when they failed, all I had to do was swap it out. But a warranty (any kind) doesn't really sway my decision - if it's offered, I'll take it knowing that I'll probably never use it or that there's a catch. But in my case, when I purchase a product or service, quality tends to be the number one criteria - a warranty is much lower on the list.
** and please note, I'm not defending Chrysler - there's not really a product of theirs that I think is worth buying, lifetime warranty or not!
