Volvo is on the verge of becoming a Chinese make, according to the news on CNN last night. If I were a Volvo owner I'd be looking to trade ASAP.
China needs an established brand or two to really launch its auto industry on the international level with something other than cheap bottom-feeder cars. At first glance, Volvo would be a big win for China, but one has to question if China would really maintain the brand and all it stands for. I have my doubts. China is good at faking quality and I don't think they would retain the real quality Volvo is noted for if they could make it look as good but be a lot cheaper by cutting lots of corners.
If an Asian company were to buy Saab I'd rather it be Hyundai/Kia. They are building decent cars and could benefit from Saab technology and could be a good owner if they recognize the strength of the Saab brand, the attributes of the cars and the loyalty of Saab owners.
I'd prefer a Euro coompany, but I don't see any of them lining up.
