One downside of ETF's is that you will pay commission each time you make a sale or purchase, so they're not good if you are buying into them on a monthly basis say. Also, you have to look out for wide bid/ask spreads on some of the more thinly traded funds. Otherwise, if you are buying and holding, they are a great low cost investment.
And I agree - indexing is the way to go, until somebody can prove to me that not only a particular actively managed fund has outperformed the index historically, but that it will continue to do so in the future.
