i believe actively managed funds will reduce volatility of a portfolio because they do not attempt to mirror the 'index'. for in stance with the latest dramatice to say the least drop in worldwide markets i'm quite sure index funds have dropped more than actively managed funds simply because active funds are restricted to the % they can invest in one company.
and furthermore dealing with a financial planner who has a feel for the markets will prolly result in you owning a more balanced portfolio attuned for your time horizon, risk comfort zone and experience. Personally i was getting my 50+ clients out of equities over the last 2 years because i could see the obvious overheating of equities. our global bond fund did 17% in 2008, a nice holding to have over the last year!!!!
