If you truley and securly want to destroy every single bit of data on your drive, then no matter what they say, the only effective way is to physically destroy the platter within the drive.
Reccomendations on doing so...
a. Take it to your local firing range and unload a full clip of 9mm shells into it.
b. Take a drill press to it.
c. See both options above
Otherwise you can search the Internet and find many programs out there that will wipe your disk. I personally use an application called 'Kill Disk' It allows you to write multiple passes with 0 and 1's. DOD standard is 3 passes, however there are some "VERY EXPENSIVE" company's that can still retrieve data after that. Generally speaking 3 passes are suffecient to protect just about any "average" John/Jane doe out there.
