To clear things up... Posted by PGAero [Email] (#1143) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PGAero) on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 12:06:50 In Reply to: California to ban black paint on cars............, andym, Thu, 26 Mar 2009 09:07:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The proposed legislation does suggest banning dark cars because the dark cars absorb more heat, and, in turn, require A/C use more often. The legislation doesn't actually ban black cars, it sets a minimum reflectivity level for paint coatings. Right now, no black paint meets the requirement. The legislation also says that the color ban will be lifted for cars with windshields which reflect at least 44% of the solar spectrum. Industry experts say that the windshield requirement will most likely be met, so the loss of black cars isn't likely.
Now, here's a question. My car's A/C cycles on and off if I turn my ACC to Auto whether I'm heating or cooling my cabin. Many cars do that already. In this case (most modern cars?) the color of the car doesn't matter. Have they thought of that?
Additionally, and someone else already mentioned it, but isn't interior color a large factor in this as well?
As a resident of CA, I think this is total hogwash. As a citizen who lives in a climate that rarely even prompts the use of AC at all, I find it myopic, narrow-minded, and just plain silly. To think that my tax dollars are paying people to think this stuff up is disheartening. All of this "carbon emission reduction" could be achieved in other ways if people drove less, or actually put the right air pressure in their tires, or changed their air filters, etc.
What about cars that don't have A/C altogether? Can I get a black Lotus without A/C? Do people even think? At all?
Since this state (which, by the way, I love because it has some of the nations greatest variations in climate and geography) has determined to reduce carbon emissions, and they seem hell-bent on accomplishing that through reduced gasoline consumption, why don't they just tax gasoline and use the revenue to invest in alternative energy projects? (Because they can't get re-elected if they propose a tax.)
I'm sorry if I've gone a bit into the political realm, but, as you can tell, this kind of thinking (fix the problem, whether it exists or not, through back-door policies that indirectly increase the cost to consumers and which have vast, irrational unintended consequences) just rubs me the wrong way.
Now, I have one good reason to buy a black car: spite. (I love black cars when they're clean, but I have a hard time keeping them that way.)
