On March 1, 1997, I signed my name a few times and drove off in a 1997 900SE. Except for the low profile tires that made paper clips on the road feel like boulders, I loved that car.
The same for the 900S that followed, even the 9-3 sedan (I mourned the end of the hatch.), and my current 9-3 SportCombi, which I'm convinced could hold a small nation.
On March 31, 2009, 145 months of driving a Saab come to end when I drop my '06 SportCombi off as its lease comes to an end. On Monday, I'll pick up it's replacement, an '09 VW Jetta SE.
It is going to be rather odd putting a key into the steering column after all these years. I'll miss people asking me what kind of car is that. (Amazing how many people don't know, or think it's a German car.) I'll miss being part of rather special family of owners. I'll miss- with my SportCombi- having one of the least seen cars on the road. (I've seen about four in the last three years.)
It is unimaginable to realize what has happened to Saab. The thought that the company may not be here in a year is even more impossible to grasp. I truly hope that doesn't happen. Even if I turn out to adore my new Jetta, I really hope that all turns out well with Saab and in three years, I will once again lease a new quirky Swedish automobile. (No, Volvos are not quirky.)
For those wondering why I don't just buy a new Saab, there are a few reasons. I must say, that number one is the fear of having a car whose maker has gone belly up. Secondly, even with the incredible deals that are out there, buying one was a bit of stretch for me.
Finally, I just want to say thanks to this web site and everyone who posts. I didn't post a lot, but I did read it often. Whenever there was a question, this was the place to come to. I'll still check in to see if there is any news about the future of Saab.
In the meantime, thanks and good luck to all.
