I was a VW fan going back to the aircooled days. I had several beetles, buses, Rabits/GTI's, Jetta's, and a Corrado (my most resent). I sold them in the mid-eighties and later in '00/'01. I also had quite a number of them when I had my used car dealership. If you stick with the priciple that the simpler the VW the better (true going back to aircooled days), I would rate them as a bit more troublesome than Saabs (depending on year/models--some were MUCH worse). Occasssionally they will build the VW from hell (across the model range) and I've heard some real horror stories, but mostly they're pretty good. The one thing about VW's is that parts are so expensive compared to Saabs. I had a customer with a late '90's VR6 GTI that needed a new alternator. The cheapest one he could find was $1200. At the same time I bought one for my 9000 from the dealer for $198. Every part I've bought for VW's has always been a lot more than I would expect being used to Saab prices. Other than that they've always been fun to drive and I've by and large enjoyed owning them.
