If you keep the car in top condition and drive it hard then maybe the extra investment in tires is worth it. But there's no rule that says you have to run the high priced rubber. Buy what makes sense for you and your wallet.
IMHO it's worth spending money on top quality tires, but when you come right down to it, unless you track the car, not many of us *need* the ultimate in summer ultra-high performance tires for daily driver use. Sure, it's nice to have maximum adhesion and handling at all times, but it can be hard to justify the extra cost for stickier sneakers that wear out fast when all your driving is on the freeway and local streets.
For example, I don't like replacing purely summer tires every 20K miles, so this week I'm putting on some all high performance seasons that will wear longer (~30K or so) but still be fun to drive on when I feel the need for speed on a back road.
Just buy good, name brand tires, and get at least an H-rated tire. Read the reviews on Tire Rack and ask here for specific advice on model of tire.
