Subaru does a great job and is, in some ways, a Saab alternative/replacement. There are tons of Subies here in southern NH and they are great cars, as long as you aren't used to a Saab.
Subaru has always kept its focus: off-center, reasonably-sized cars, reliable, narrow product line with two core platforms, versatile, durable, relatively fun to drive, semi-decent fuel economy. It's what their customers wanted and they have been doing this successfully for decades.
Saab used to be like that, until GM got its grubby mitts on it and inflicted GM-think on Saab, neutralizing the brand and all the unique traits that made it successful. GM is the poster boy for how to kill a successful brand.
Saab--in whatever form it takes next--needs to use it's old approach again. It works for Subaru and could work for Saab again. We can only hope for the best.
