For someone looking for a taller vehicle, the Forester is a great car and it does start at a great price (especially considering AWD). But add a turbo, and the Forester is as expensive as a Saab...
I'm guessing you are driving a stick - our friends couldn't stand the 4-speed automatic, so they got a stick and like it. I haven't driven the newest Forester, but with the Outback, I found the automatic got lousy mpg (about 23 highway) because of the gearing in that transmission - no turbo, not much low end torque, but geared to be quick off the line, so top gear comes in too soon + cruising RPMs are high... with a 5th gear, that probably fixes it.
Given our friends issues with Forester/Outback, I'm pretty sure had they driven a 9-5 wagon, they'd have liked it. But GM is an aversion to them, and given what's gone on at GM in the past 8 months or so since they bought the Forester, I don't blame them... The new Saab needs to find a way to attract these kinds of customers - essentially the type of customers Saab used to have! There are enough of them for Saab to build a business case.
