To avoid the 192.168.1.xx debacle you can use your router's port range forward capability. So, you define your 192.168.1.xx address, port 1234 and that will be 'forwarded' when the outside computer comes knocking.

My local network, for example, forwards ports for remote desktop login, remote web proxy (Youtube and Facebook from work :-)), home security interface, home security webcam interface, ftp server, etc, All these map to my own 'static' IP address (not really static, just whatever my ISP allocated, which changes of course, but not often) and so on.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding for details, and of course it would depend on what router you have at your end.

For webcams, I use the Linksys latest one, works like a charm.
