Here are my recommendations:
-Use a calling card (either with a mobile or land line) to call overseas.
-If you have a GSM phone or a Verizon "world phone" with a SIM card, you can use it over there at a high per-minute cost, which might be fine for a short trip or if you can expense it. Texts are still fairly cheap and can be a good way to keep in touch.
-If you have a GSM phone you can often have it unlocked by your carrier for free or by getting a code over the internet for about $15. Now you can just buy a pre-paid SIM card for dirt cheap at just about any store in the UK and use it in your phone.
-If you don't have a GSM phone or don't want to fiddle with it, by a cheap pre-paid phone over there. Thery're very easy to find as this is a far more common way of buying phones in Europe than the US. It should be around $50 or so.
Best,
Craig
