I agree on the cost of restoration - to a point. I restored an older Alfa Spider, had it a few years, sold it for less than I had into it (coincidentally to a guy in Western Michigan!). That car was somewhat rare, but not exactly a highly sought-after collectible. On the other hand, some muscle cars are going for completely outrageous prices: a couple of years ago I saw a 197X Dodge Challenger convertible that sold for >$1M; it didn't look very different from the one that belonged to one of the drivers in my carpool when that car was new, although he had "only" the 383, not the 427 Hemi engine.
