I once owned a Eurovan, (not camper) and it was pleasant enough to drive, but I don't think it can really tow a lot (FWD, already moving a lot of weight through an automatic). And the VR6 has some expensive repair items as they get old (like having to remove the intake manifold to change an emissions control sensor). Minivans (Chrysler, Honda, etc.) are not a fair comparison. Used VW campers are often pricy - the people who have them for sale seem to believe they're extremely valuable.
If you liked the Roadtrek, perhaps finding an older RT170, followed by a proactive program to check up/fix up the important systems (engine, brakes, etc.) would be cheaper, get you a reliable ride, a useful camper, and higher towing capacity? I have a mid-90s dodge 4x4 dakota truck with a 318 that has 180K miles on it an has been extremely reliable over the years, so a dodge based RT170 is probably what I'd be looking for. IMHO, of course.
Good luck
