Our 14x28 pool was installed with the same 1-1/2 HP pump you have. It and the S200 sand filter were a bit of overkill for the size of our pool when it was installed 22 years ago.
Our pump started making the same noise, with the same diffilculty starting in Spring, at about the 10 year point. The motor failed completely a year or two later. Buying a motor in anticipation of the impending failure will save you money, as you can wait for sales rather than being forced to pay the regular price duirng a Holiday weekend.
When you replace the motor, also replace the pump impeller. This will add another $45 or so to the job, but the impellers will fail without warning. A loud "Bang!" as the FRP impeller snaps, then just a whrrrr sound as the motor is spinning freely. Or maybe loud chatter as the impeller parts are grinding each other into dust within the pump housing.
Try on-line Pool Supply Houses as well as Grainger for a replacement motor. I suspect Grainger will be much cheaper. I got my new impeller from Specialty Pool Parts, http://www.poolproducts.com
My impeller broke during Memorial Day weekend a few years ago, no local pool store carries replacement impellers, so I had to buy a complete new pump to get the pool working again. Ouch! So now I have two Hayward Super Pumps.
