It's really funny that you just posted this. My friend Marsha has 2 small mowers, and one is an MTD (Modern Tool and Die in Cleveland). About a month ago her sister Renee wanted to borrow it, but it wouldn't start. It has some half-a$$ spring start system that would tension a spring when the engine was running. Then the next time, the spring would start the engine. Well, this mower wouldn't start and I was using the pull-cord to start it. After about 10 pulls it tried to start, it pulled the starter cord in and it wrapped around the handle - spinning the cord at a very high speed. Well the grip at the end of the cord spun around and hit the top of my left hand near the thumb. It hurt so bad that I thought that I was going to pass out. The impact left an oval cut on my hand that still hasn't healed. The impact cracked the cast iron blade adapter where it bolts onto the engine shaft. I will never (repeat never) touch that POS again. I've been messing with mowers for almost 50 years and never been hurt by one... Ron
