OCM, it would be a disaster to sell a car in 2009 with 1979 technology. You have to understand that you are preaching to the C900 faithful, but for the masses who consider buying that 9-3, pit it against Volvo, Acura, Infiniti, Subaru, Volkswagen, etc. Saab could sell a few spruced-up 900's to us hard core Saab-philes, but for the people who consider it a Swedish (or wait--Is it from France?-- as I overheard someone say at a car show once) Chevy Malibu or Honda Accord--no way. New car buyers generally like bells and whistles.
I could not agree more with the state of M-B products. My Dad's former 1984 300 turbo diesel is probably going strong somewhere as somebody's cooking oil-powered homebuilt. That was a car that was, as you said, designed down to every last bolt to operate a very long time.
