My dad bought a new top of the line Mercedes in 1984 and was surprised to see the the drivers side mirror was manual and not electric like the passenger side was. The explanation from MB was that there was NO NEED for it to be electric, you can move in with your hand. Back then Mercedes put the qulity into the body work and interior and mechanical stuff. Every nut and bolt was designed and engineered to be the best it could possibly be so the car would last. They avoided uneccessary gizmos because it was just something more to go wrong. Now they've gone just the opposite direction--they cut corners on everything so they can festion the cars with a bunch of hightech gizmos that start giving problems before the warrenty even runs out. I've actually thought of buying something like a Jeep just to get a simple vehicle without all of the over-complicated crap they have on cars these days. Probably not a good move though. Actually, of all the European brands (including VW)Saab is probably the least complicated (assuming a 4 cylinder front drive car).
