is increasingly true. The basic car isn't so bad. Engine, brakes, tires, fit and finish, (maybe) transmissions. It's all the other crap that you don't really need.
DVD players, OnStar, Built-in nav systems, tire pressure monitors, cameras for backing up, and similar BS is a waste of energy, money and materials, IMHO and all of it is a problem waiting to happen. IMHO people really want too much in cars and while the technology more or less works it's also more that can go wrong. And because these electronics are so complex it's very hard for them to work reliably for the long haul. As modern cars age it will likely become very costly to keep everything working as intended, or many features will simply not work.
The problem with electronics is that cars have to live outdoors in essentially hostile environments that range from extreme heat to cold, desert dry to sweltering humidity, rain and snow and ice, near constant vibration, and often inconsistent or indifferent maintenance. And since many parts are made by the lowest bidder it all combines to be a not so good formula for durability or longevity. Add in planned obsolescence and it's a not pretty.
I find myself looking for cars with less, rather than more. Safe. Good ride, strong engine and driveline, decent handling, supportive seats and good climate control. Fun to drive. Durable. The rest is window dressing.
