In addition to what other have said, and just as important is the length you are trying to run your cord. DC stands for direct current, and the longer you need to run the cable, the bigger (thicker, in terms of wire gauge) the cable needs to be.
For example, you can use 10 gauge wire to send 30 amps of 12 volt DC power, but if you're going to run it 500 feet you will have a substantial amount of line loss and you will likely not see 12 volts at the other end.
