I think Canon, Nikon and Sony all have their merits. In the past two years the range of differences between the output of these cameras has become very small. Don't fall into the the megapixel trap as MP go up so does noise. 10MP is great. 12-14 OK.

What ever you buy get image stabilization on the lenses or on the camera body (Sony). This allows for low light slow shutter speeds to be used and also reduced shake on telophoto. The blur reduced by either a lens based or body based anti-shake/optical stabilization/vibration reduction system is worth its weight in gold.

Any current Canon, Nikon or Sony takes great pics, Sony IMO has the best live view system (due to its focusing system) if you want that feature. There is also limited video available on the new Nikon but no autofocus in that mode.

I left out Panasonic and Olympus due to their more limited lens choices and Pentax because it's in financial hot water but they make great DSLR's too. Once again I'd go w/ a Canon, Nikon or Sony but there are clearly good cameras from others.

The lens will make or break your camera and remember over time you change the bodies and keep the lenses if the are better than kit lenses. Companies try to bundle two of the lowest end lens' with the camera so think about the reality of taking two lenses in your normal photography...I don't like kit lenses at all...

I suggest Tamron 18-270 (for Canon, Nikon or Sony) or Nikon's 18-250 VR (only for Nikon). These lenses are for an all in one with the emphases on telephoto. There are good choices in low light lenses too but if your just starting our I think you'll like the all in one approach to start out with.
