Mostly self taught. During my six years in the retail photo shop, I learned a lot by reading and listening and watching. My first job after that, teaching at a Montana community college, had me teaching intro to photography, so I had to learn more. But really, a few thousand frames is the best teacher, letting you see what works as well as what you like.
Yes, the trip was super, though too short. The first week, we spent two nights in Strasbourg and five in Germany with two daytrips into Austria; the second week, my Romanian sister-in-law showed us around Transylvania, which was absolutely amazing in many, many ways.
