There are lots of hatchbacks in Europe where a hatches in medium-size cars are seen as useful and practical. So the lovely A5 having a hatch doesn't mean Saab shouldn't offer one. Besides, Audis aren't exactly cheap to keep, which can make them less appealing to many people.
If Saab brings back hatchbacks I think it will help rebuild the brand. I think people want more alternatives than a sedan with a trunk or a "crossover" which are really just tall wagons, especially as cars begin to shrink in size. And Audi having one only shows that the market is probably there, and can be built.
Almost every time I go to someplace like Home Depot and slip a huge load into the back of my 9K I have people asking what kind of car it is or saying how nice it must be to be able to just load up and drive away. Hatches are coming back. The other day I was buying a bunch of gardening stuff: bags and bags of this and that, hoses, etc. I was parked next to a guy in a big pick up who had a similar mix of stuff on his cart. He looked at me as I came up to the 9K, and it was clear from his expression he thought it would be pretty amusing to watch me get it all into the Saab--figuring it had a trunk. So I pop the hatch, toss the stuff in and close the lid. He sorta blinked and eyeballed the car, clearly surprised. It was amusing. Same thing last winter when I bought a big generator. The HD guy saw the car and said we can't get this in, you'll need to borrow our truck or use a trailer. I popped the hatch and in it went. "Cool! What kind of car is this?" he asked.
