I would argue that Audi made a huge turnaround with the introduction of the A4/6. Audi nearly pulled out of the US market and had dismal sales numbers, but went on to redefine themselves. I think Cadillac has done similar things, but Audi has done more by coming from lower, and reaching taller. (That's my opinion of the matter)
I think Saab should do something similar by returning to their roots of offering an alternative to BMW/Audi/MB rather than copy them. I'd love to see cars that are equipped like VW Jetta/Passat, but with Saab driving dynamics. Make XWD optional on all cars, and make the TTiD avaialable in the states. I don't want a luxury car, I want an immensely capable Sedan/5dr/Wagon that feel solid and drives VERY well. I want it to be smart and safe (Night panel, Saab real-world safety record, folding seats, bio-fuel compatible.)
One more thing: Why not make Turbo fours to drive the front wheels, and make an electric hybrid system to drive the rears. Put a button on the dash which makes the car AWD for the times you need it, and make it operate as a hybrid during normal driving. Write code which makes the car automatically engage AWD during high-G or slip-detected driving. Maybe a TTiD Hybrid would get 50-70 MPG, and would have switchable AWD.
(If I had the time and money, I'd consider making a home-grown AWD 9000 with the above configuration. There's certainly plenty of trunk space for the batteries and the motor could be a center-mounted in-line unit like the one shown on the BioPower Hybrid Cvt. a few years ago.
