Similar story. My 401(k) was at $403K in Jan 2008 and steadily declined to $393K at the end of Aug 2008 even though I was adding about $350/wk into it. I smelled a rat with what was going on and was looking to dump all my funds and roll the money into bonds. My wife's broker said, 'Don't panic. Things will be just fine, etc.' Anyway, I ignored the 'advice' and moved 90% of my 401(k) into bond funds and today I sit at $385K. Since some people are down 40%-50% I feel relatively lucky. The moral of the story? Sometimes you have to ignore advice from financial 'professionals' and go with your gut. Now, when do I dump the bond funds?......
