I got the sense at the end of the segment that it was a joke. I can't pin down where, but it was implied.

I've hear rumor that The Stig is actually a couple/three drivers. Given production shooting schedules, when cars are available, and when pro drivers would be available, it would make sense to have a few drivers on tap. It's not like the world lacks good test track drivers.

Still, it was an enjoyable segment.
