but I had mine done on my 03 Aero 3 months ago by a reasonable and extremely good independent mechanic in NJ (no help to you being here). I think he charged me more like 4 hrs, and because he was running late, I watched the re-assembly, and concluded that he was entitled to his money. Problem with it is that there were things he did by feel and all kinds of small parts that he just knew by rote, which is why i would not go to an ordinary A/C place or try it myself. I asked him about reconditioned evaporators, he said impossible, as they have to cut the pipes to get it out of the car. He got the part new for $550 I think. Having spent some time in South Georgia, I feel your pain. But if the car is otherwise sound and you have a good independent mechanic, try to get the $$ togather to fix it. Mine worked really well at the end of the job.
