Most problems occur during storage.
During off-season non-use, gas evaporates/degrades and forms gummy/hard "varnish" which clogs needle valves, floats and the myriad tiny jets in the carburetor. If it's a 2 stroke, it is essential to drain the tank and run the motor dry, because the gas evaporates and leaves the oil behind to thicken and turn to goo. Some carbs have a drain screw on the bottom of the float bowl to facilitate complete drainage. Before running the tank dry, add a good dose of Sta-bil to the tank.
I always add Sta-Bil to all my fuel blends for small motors to minimize start-up woes. I have also found that SeaFoam (in the gas) helped insure a steady idle in some machines.
If you live on a lake or near the shore, stalling the motor with "Fogging Oil" will prevent rusty rings and valves. Most boat owners do this.
If you chose to leave the oil out, off season, pull the spark plug wire and afix Large "NO OIL" tag to the end of the wire!
