Yes, that's true, the WH filter would prolong the life of the fridge filter. How often are you supposed to replace it under normal conditions?
No, the 0.5 micron filter (linked below) never plugs up on us. Our water is relatively clean, but I can't imagine that it's cleaner than what you're getting after passing thru the WH setup you've got. Since it's a separate faucet off the edge of the sink, we can swing it out to fill pots, pitchers & ice cube trays. It costs $25 to replace & provides enough cooking, drinking & ice cube water for our family of four (& five pets) for an entire year. I'd think a filter like ours would last maybe two years in your setup. The flow does slow down a little by the time I need to replace it, but it's still adequate. The taste does improve after replacement as well, so I could probably change it earlier if I wanted to.
It goes into the housing pictured. The housing frequently goes on sale. I think I paid $25 for it a few years ago.
