I have Saab/Thule load bars and Thule Velo-Vise bike trays for both cars (2002 9-3SE 5-door, 2002 9-5 Aero SW). The Velo Vise trays are fork-mount, which means that the front wheel has to be removed. However, the bikes are VERY stable in transit and it locks the bike to the roof rack. Also, without a front wheel this lowers the frame so it makes it easier to put the bike on the roof.
If anyone messes with your bike, they'll have to do it out in the open unless you park between 2 SUVs (so don't).

Disclaimer - I'm 6' 2" and my bikes are all pretty light (MTBs and road bike). My wife is 5' 2" and can still load her heaviest MTB (about 26.5lb) on a the roof - she's just not happy about it.
