a tip: Go with the simple Thule crossbars. Skip the expensive bike mounting hardware (rail ect..). Buy "Bike Tites" for $8 each which are made to bolt anywhere and mount the forks. Drill and mount these on the front bar (use stainless 1/4-20 and ny-lock nuts) in such a way that they hang off the rear of the bar and are below it. (As far outboard as possible like others have noted) Now you can still throw that sheet of plywood or whatever on the racks without any hardware removal or interference. The rear wheel ? Velcro strap that loops back on itself around the rim and bar. Steal them off some old ski boots...If your are concerned about the wheel shifting left or right, you could add a u-bolt and loop the strap through that. Clean, simple, not expensive.
