I bought a loose diamond last year based on several friends’ recommendations and strongly recommend going that route as well.
1) Cut is important to make the diamond brilliant. I looked at several diamonds that were the same color and clarity but had varying cut ratings. The poor diamond was cut shallow most likely to maximize the diamond weight, this resulted in the light being lost through the bottom giving the diamond a very lack luster sparkle. The price difference between diamonds that only varied in cut quality was minimal but the brilliance was huge. I quickly limited my search to diamonds with good or better cut ratings only.
2) Color is important when having the ring set in platinum or white gold, if the ring is yellow gold I would suggest looking at diamonds with lower color ratings (J,K,L) as the color imperfection will not be noticeable. Since I was having the ring set in platinum color I limited my search to diamonds with D, E, or F color (D is the best ie colorless).
3) Clarity refers to the imperfections in the diamond. I was did not want to buy a diamond that I could see a flaw in but was not willing to pay for a diamond that was perfect. Internally flawless (IF) to very slightly included #2 (VS2) looked all the same to me even under magnification. Included #3 (I3) through slightly included #2 (SI2) was easy to spot the imperfections without magnification. Without magnification I could not tell the difference between and SI1 and VS2 but with magnification I could. I decided to go with a VS2-VS1.
4) Carat was the last factor I looked at as size was not important when compared to quality. Based on the above criteria and my price range the jewelry brought out several diamonds for me to choose from.
I settled on a .49ct-E-VS2-very good diamond certified by the GIA. My fiancée regularly receives comments on how brilliant the diamond is and I routinely catch her looking into its sparkle all at the price that fit my budget.
If you don't go and look at loose diamonds you will never get a feel for how each of the 4Cs play a role and which ones you are willing to pay for.
Best of luck,
Bruce
