I never like solitaires because my mother managed to break her ring a few times since the stone protrudes above and away from the finger (though we never lost the diamond).
I got my wife a diamond band -- not a solitaire -- from a small jewelry store in RI that my family has used for decades even though I live in California. Trust in the product was essential and no mall store can give you that (I always look at mall stores as selling just above industrial grade diamonds for absurd markups, etc., and wonder who actually buys stuff there.)
Anyway, I'm coming up on my 10th anniversary next year and I plan on getting my wife another diamond. In our jewelry experience over the past nine years, Costco has fair prices and high quality stones. In other words, don't be afraid to get one there -- it's good stuff and if you're not a member, pay the $50 to join. You'll make that $50 back several times over. They have a bunch of 1 ctw products between $1-2K. Here's a link to their diamond band rings:

Lastly, don't overspend. Do not go into debt for an engagement ring! There's some stressful, BS 'rule' about a man having to spend two months salary on an engagement ring. Nonsense. When I got engaged that would've been a $12,500 ring, and today that would be a $25K ring! Not in this life! Like another poster said, I'm not dropping that kind of scratch for an artificial shortage, cartel-induced price. I dropped $1900 back in 2000 and my wife absolutely loves the ring. If you think your future wife will give you a bunch of static because you didn't spend enough on the ring, you might consider that it's time to reconsider your choice. Anyway, you'll need all your extra cash for a house and some furniture.
